With school fees rising 17–18% after the January 2025 VAT hike, finding the best value UK boarding schools is more important than ever. To help families make informed choices, The Telegraph recently ranked private schools by comparing termly fees with academic results and the quality of school facilities.

30-JUL-2025 | At PRODIREKT, we have identified some of the most affordable and academically strong options for your child’s study abroad journey, based on The Telegraph’s analysis. For the first time, this comparison includes not just academic performance but also facilities such as sports halls, theaters, and arts programs. We encourage parents to explore here the data and consult with our academic advisors for tailored support.
Since January 2025, private schools in England have been required to charge 20% VAT on fees. Combined with higher National Insurance contributions and the removal of business rates relief, average fees have increased far beyond expectations — rising 17–18% instead of the government’s projected 10–15%. As academic advisors, we recognize how this shift has made the decision-making process far more complex and financially challenging for families.

Independent schools vary widely in size, format, and cost, with annual fees ranging from under £10,000 to over £60,000 for boarders at the most expensive schools. In 2022–23, about 58% of Year 13 day fees were below £20,000 per year. Since VAT was introduced, only 25% of schools now remain under that threshold — greatly limiting choices for families with moderate budgets.
The consequences have been significant. Nearly 11,000 students left private schools in early 2025, and at least 44 schools have shut down — primarily in the mid-range and lower-fee segments. Although the VAT policy was intended to target the most elite schools, it has disproportionately affected more affordable institutions and reduced access for many families. Today, value for money is the most important factor in selecting a UK private school.
With rising costs, parents are more focused than ever on academic results. Cardiff Sixth Form College ranked highest last year, with more than 91% of A-levels graded A* or A. However, with boarding fees at £72,000 per year, the school is out of reach for many.
Looking beyond the well-known names, some lesser-known schools deliver similar academic results at a much lower cost. For example, St Michael’s School in Carmarthenshire achieved 87% A*/A grades, while charging £14,000 less per year than Cardiff Sixth Form.
The Telegraph named King Edward VI High School for Girls in Birmingham as the top value private school in the UK. With termly fees of around £7,145 — well below the national average — and 80.3% of A-levels graded A* or A, the school offers a strong combination of academic excellence and affordability. It also provides impressive sports and music facilities, making it a standout choice for families seeking both achievement and enrichment.
