26–JUL–2026 | Recently, I read a very interesting article about how far AI has advanced in less than a year and how deeply it is already affecting education, in both good and bad ways.

Until recently, most discussions about AI in education focused on students generating essays or finding quick answers.

That already sounds old-fashioned.

AI can create the final assignment, but it can also produce the outline, the research, the early drafts, the corrections, the discussion comments, and even the “evidence” showing how the student supposedly arrived at the final result.

AI can now produce the essay, the research, the charts, the discussion posts, and even the revision history. The classroom may look the same, but proving who actually did the thinking is becoming much more difficult.

In other words, simply asking AI to write a perfect essay is beginning to look like the innocent old days.

Some of these developments sound almost unbelievable: students appearing in online classes through AI avatars, artificial participation in classroom discussions, fake research papers, and complete revision histories created only after the final assignment is finished.

Many teachers, parents, and schools probably do not realize that they are already dealing with some of this, and may face much more during the coming school year.

Here are ten developments worth knowing about:

1. A student may attend class without actually attending

During an online class, an AI-generated image, voice, or avatar can appear on screen and respond on the student’s behalf.

So yes, teachers may now need to ask not only whether the camera is on, but whether the person behind it is real.

2. AI can participate in class discussions

An AI agent can write discussion posts, respond to classmates, and contribute to group chats while sounding like the student who is supposed to be doing the work.

The student can appear active, thoughtful, and engaged without having read very much at all.

3. AI can show the full “working process”

AI is no longer limited to giving the correct answer.

It can produce convincing calculations, logical steps, explanations, and even handwritten-looking work, creating the impression that the student genuinely solved the problem.

4. Students can test how to beat AI detectors

Some students can keep changing AI-generated text until the school’s detection software no longer recognizes it.

It becomes a strange competition: the school buys a detector, the student tests it, and AI helps both sides.

I doubt many teachers entered education because they dreamed of becoming full-time digital police officers.

5. AI can invent believable academic sources

It can create the title of a research paper, the author’s name, a journal, a link, and even an official-looking reference number.

Everything may look perfectly academic.

There is only one small problem: the research paper may not exist.

6. AI can create a revision history after the assignment is finished

A student can generate the final essay first and then ask AI to create the outline, rough drafts, notes, corrections, and comments afterward.

The entire “learning journey” can therefore be produced after the destination has already been reached.

7. Students can hide instructions inside exam answers

If an assessment system uses AI, students may insert hidden commands into their work and try to influence the system, reveal the marking rules, or confuse the assessment process.

It sounds like science fiction, but it is already technically possible.

8. AI can produce false evidence of original work

Charts, images, audio, presentations, research materials, and creative projects can all be generated by AI and presented as the student’s own work.

The final result may be impressive. But who, or what, actually created it?

9. AI can help during an online test without opening another page

Browser-based AI can read what is visible on the screen and provide answers while the student remains on the exam page.

Watching for copied text, additional tabs, or open chatbot windows is no longer enough.

10. Deepfakes can be used for harassment and impersonation

AI-generated images, videos, and voices can be used to humiliate, threaten, blackmail, or falsely impersonate students and teachers.

At that point, we are no longer discussing only academic honesty. We are dealing with safety, privacy, and potentially serious legal issues.

The Real Question: Who Is Actually Doing the Thinking?

Some of this is frightening. Some of it is fascinating. Most of it is probably both.

But an important point is often missed.

There is nothing wrong with a perfect essay, an excellent presentation, or a beautifully developed project. In fact, that is great.

The problem begins when the student cannot explain the idea, defend the choices, check the sources, or apply the same knowledge to a different situation.

And, to be fair, the same should apply to teachers.

There is nothing wrong with teachers using AI to prepare materials, develop exercises, or explore new teaching ideas. The problem begins when they cannot evaluate the result, challenge it, explain it, or recognize when it is wrong.

So perhaps the real question is no longer:

Did the student use AI?

A better question may be:

Does the student understand the work, and was the student genuinely challenged by it?

Can the student explain why one source was chosen over another? Defend an opinion? Show how the idea developed? Respond to an unexpected question? Use the same knowledge in a new context?

A polished final product is no longer enough proof.

Schools need more short conversations, oral explanations, classroom demonstrations, checkpoints, verified sources, and assignments in which students show their reasoning while the work is being developed.

Teachers who still feel uncomfortable with AI should not be judged for that. The technology is moving very quickly, and even people who use it every day are constantly trying to catch up.

But avoiding it completely is becoming less realistic.

Teachers do not need to become computer experts. They do need to understand what AI can do, what it cannot do reliably, and how students may use it, both honestly and dishonestly.

Perhaps AI is not simply damaging education, as some fear.

It is already exposing weaknesses that were there long before AI, and it may finally push schools to rethink how they teach, challenge students, and recognize real understanding.

AI is forcing schools to confront something much bigger than cheating. It is making them ask whether traditional assignments ever gave us enough proof of genuine learning in the first place.

The new school year is arriving with some very old questions, but the answers need to be different.

Students are already using AI.

Are schools ready for them?
