The importance of role models in choosing our career or life path

The power of role models and their influence on us cannot be underestimated. This is particularly true for young people.

Whether they are a parent, an athlete, a musician, an actor, or someone else, young people are going to latch onto someone and their accompanying philosophy. They will be influenced by that person’s words, because at their young age they lack the experience and wisdom to know otherwise.

When it comes to celebrity role models, media and educators can enhance celebrities’ positive or negative influence on teens, so do we then have the responsibility to channel and explain the messages conveyed by the famous?

Verbalists Education & Language Network has used its privilege of being able to cover major events and festivals in Europe to use celebrities to positively influence our young students’ lives.

The celebrity interviews Verbalists have been doing about the importance of learning languages, travelling, education, and similar have helped entertain and engage young learners “on their own terms.” In turn, it also helped increase the popularity and trust of both young and adult learners in our media, as well as education and academic advising services.

What level of influence role models have today in young people’s choice of their education path, or even their profession? Has social media reduced or enhanced the importance of celebrities as role models? Who was your role model as you were growing up? What parts of them were you influenced by?

  1. I think it’s all about being able to inspire people, no matter whether you are a celebrity, or a teacher, or a coach, or an influencer or someone whose role is to give advice. I believe anyone can be an influencer, as long as they speak about what they do with passion, however, those who are in the limelight have a bigger responsibility because they reach a bigger volume of people.

My role models were people who didnt satisfy themselves with one job and one career. Like some of my colleagues….I am always giving advice to my students, that they have to choose something interesting for them and also to have abilities for that job. Loving that job in first place. Social media has a big influence, they all want to be Messi, Novak Djokovic, popular singers, actors.😁..and its not bad, but social media has to promote some diffrent role models. ..At least I think so…I am a mom of three sons and work with 1100 students in my school, and I have personal and professional experience…

Well, speaking from my point of view, social media has a big influence on young people’s lives, their way of thinking. Family is going through a tough period, so children are looking for some rode models outside of their micro units. As for myself, my role models were my parents, my mum has been my idol, my primary maths teacher played a great part im my way of thinking, then my university professors, many of whom were walking legends, then my principle at the school I am working at, so we are always learning from whom we choose. I learned from their personalities, experience and knowledge.

Social media, particularly in these months, has never had a more impactful presence in young people’s lives. My background: teachers, university mentors that I had the opportunity to create personal connections with were the ones that influenced my thinking and career choices. Great initiative, btw, Dejan!

Yes indeed, role models have, or can have, a lot of influence on young people. Ancient cultures knew this fact. Let me take Africa: In Mali EDUCATION means: TO SET AN EXAMPLE.
I taught English in Cairo from 1973 to 1980. More than thirty years later I received two e-mails from two former Egyptian students:
    > Dear Herr Zappe,
    > My name is Rania Amin, and I was your student maybe 33 years ago, in DEO Cairo…. I can’t believe I got hold to your email. I want to tell you that you have been my inspiration for many many years. You opened my eyes to so many things that are humane and beautiful like no other teacher did. I think it’s because of you I became interested in psychology, and now I’m a school counselor & I love my job… I talk about you a lot and have even written a story about you that has been turned into a comics, illustrated by a Lebanese friend… Yes, I am also a writer of children’s books, and comics for teenagers & adults. I’d like to share this story with you but I’ll wait for your reply first.
    > I’m really happy I finally got the chance to tell you:
    > THANK YOU HERR ZAPPE
    > And wish you all the best,
    > Rania Amin
