Students are now getting powerful AI tools for free, thanks to new offers from OpenAI and Google. We explore how these tools are changing the way students learn and why schools must adapt fast.
27–APR–2025 | Students are stepping into a new era where AI is becoming a major part of their education, thanks to free offers from OpenAI and Google. In this article, we explore how these AI tools are shaping the future of learning and why both students and schools need to stay ahead of the curve.
With finals season around the corner, OpenAI and Google are offering U.S. college students free access to their premium AI services. OpenAI’s deal, available from March 31 to May 31, 2025, features ChatGPT Plus powered by GPT-4o, along with DALL·E 3 for image creation and an advanced voice mode. Meanwhile, Google’s offer, open for sign-up until June 30, 2025, and valid through spring 2026, gives students access to Gemini Advanced, Deep Research, NotebookLM Plus, Veo 2 video tools, Whisk, and a generous 2TB of cloud storage.

Short-Term Help vs. Long-Term Support
OpenAI is offering a quick, focused boost — ChatGPT Plus becomes a handy study buddy during the intense finals period, assisting with research, writing support, and fast image generation.
On the other hand, Google is taking a longer view. Their student package integrates AI into daily tasks across an entire academic year, with tools for writing, spreadsheets, presentations, and even creating videos.
OpenAI’s strategy focuses on giving immediate support when students are under the most pressure. Google is aiming to become part of the everyday study routine, helping students build long-term habits with AI. Students can take advantage of both without needing to pick sides.
However, there is more work to do beyond giving away free AI. Universities need to focus on training faculty to use these tools effectively and teach students to use them ethically. Professional development will be key to making sure AI supports real learning instead of shortcuts.
Lastly, these free AI programs should not stop at U.S. and Canadian borders. Students worldwide deserve the same opportunities. Expanding these initiatives globally would help close educational gaps and give more learners the chance to work smarter, not harder.
