25–NOV–2023 | As of December 1, 2023, Canadian colleges and universities are mandated to meticulously verify each student’s acceptance letter with Canadian immigration authorities. This measure aims to thwart the circulation of counterfeit acceptance letters and ensure the legitimacy of study permits.
Commencing with the fall semester in 2024, Canadian Immigration will acknowledge and accord special treatment to institutions offering outstanding services and support for international students. Such schools will benefit from expedited processing for study permit applications.

In 2022, Canada achieved an unprecedented milestone by welcoming over 800,000 international students, solidifying its position as a premier destination for global education. However, this remarkable 179% growth since 2013 has outpaced the development of student housing and enhanced student protections.
Beyond the remarkable surge in international student enrollments, Canada exceeded its immigration targets in 2022, with over 430,000 foreign-born individuals attaining permanent residency – the highest in decades.
Anticipations suggest that the 2023 immigration target of 465,000 may be surpassed, potentially reaching 525,000. This not only exceeds the 2024 goal of 485,000 but also surpasses the 2025 target of 500,000.
In Canada, the proportion of international students in the post-secondary student population is significantly higher than in the United States. While the U.S. has slightly over 1 million international students out of 16.2 million total higher education students, Canada boasts nearly 800,000 international students out of just over 2 million full-time post-secondary students.
This underscores the vital role played by international students in the Canadian post-secondary system, contributing significantly to the country’s economy.
