Earlier career start, better payback
One important point that is often overlooked when comparing study options in Germany is the overall timeline.
When comparing study options in Germany, many students and parents focus mainly on tuition fees. Public universities are often seen as the more affordable option, while private universities may appear more expensive at first glance.
However, the real comparison is not only about tuition. It is also about time, access, language requirements, and how quickly a student can start building a career.

One important point that is often overlooked is that many international students cannot enter German public universities directly. If their school-leaving qualification is not considered equivalent to the German Abitur, they may first need to complete a Studienkolleg or another preparatory pathway. This usually means an extra year of study, additional entrance requirements, and higher German language expectations, often at C1 level.
As a result, what looks like a lower-cost option at the beginning may actually become a longer and more demanding route. In practice, for many international students, the full path to graduation through a public university can take around 4–5 years.
By contrast, private universities such as University of Europe for Applied Sciences (UE) often allow students to start their Bachelor’s degree directly, usually in English, without an additional preparatory year. This means students can normally complete their degree in 3 years and enter the job market earlier.
A simple comparison makes the difference easier to understand:
| Factor | Public Universities | Private Universities |
|---|---|---|
| Timeline to graduation | Typically 4–5 years (including Studienkolleg and possible delays) | Typically 3 years (direct Bachelor entry) |
| Total cost (real) | Low tuition, but longer duration often means higher total living costs | Higher tuition, but shorter duration may reduce total living costs |
| Language of study | Mostly German, often with high language requirements | Many programs available in English |
| Entry requirements | Strict, and may include Studienkolleg, entrance exams, and qualification checks | More flexible, with direct entry often possible |
| Career start | Later entry into the job market | Earlier entry into the job market |
This is why the decision should not be based on tuition alone. A longer route means more time spent paying for accommodation, food, health insurance, transport, and everyday living expenses, without yet earning a professional salary. A shorter route can reduce those additional costs and allow students to begin working and gaining experience sooner.
Another important factor is accessibility. Public universities are an excellent option for students who already meet direct admission requirements, have strong German language skills, and are comfortable with a more traditional and sometimes less predictable admission process. Private universities may be a better fit for students who want a clearer and faster pathway, prefer to study in English, and want to start their careers as early as possible.
In simple terms, it is not only about how much you spend on tuition. It is about how quickly you can begin your studies, complete your degree, enter the job market, and start seeing the return on your investment.
