08-OCT-2022 | The Canadian government announced on Friday that it has temporarily lifted the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours that international students are permitted to work in Canada while classes are in session.
Instead of being limited to 20 hours per week, from November 15, post-secondary international students will be able to work as much as they like. The temporary measure will be in place until December 31, 2023. Candidates who have already submitted a Study Permit application are included in the new measure if approved.
This comes as Canadian employers face unprecedented difficulties in finding and retaining the workers they require during this period of economic recovery and growth. The unemployment rate in Canada is low by historical standards. Statistics Canada just reported that that country’s unemployment rate fell to 5.2 per cent in September, down from 5.4 per cent in August.
Canada recently extended a Covid-19 measure to allow candidates studying online from abroad to count that time towards a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
These latest measures to benefit international students are one of many introduced by Canada recently, as it looks to maintain its reputation as one of the best countries in the world to study. There were nearly 450,000 new study permits issued last year alone. Demand to study in Canada remains strong due to various factors, such as the quality of the country’s educational institutions, multiculturalism, affordability of the Canadian dollar, and the work and permanent residence opportunities that the country offers.
