Positive youth development with the Ridley College Cadet Program

PRODIREKT’s academic advisors were invited by Ridley College, one of the world’s most prestigious schools, to be their guest last week. We spent two days at this beautiful school, located near lake Ontario, just 20 minutes west of famous Niagara Falls. On that occasion, we also had a unique opportunity to witness the Ridley College cadets on parade for annual inspection. We were told that there were few school traditions as ceremonious and colorful as Ridley’s Cadet Program, and we couldn’t agree more. Please read our full school review and experience a taste of what our students and their parents can expect to find at Ridley College.

We bring you here a few of our photos and brief interview with Mark, a charming student from Russia, to convey some of the event’s colors and great atmosphere.

The Ridley students have the opportunity to be part of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets program. Cadets has been a part of Ridley’s history for more than a century and is one of the longest standing traditions at the school.

It is important to note that cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces and there is no expectation to join the military at a later date. The Ridley cadets are encouraged to become active and responsible members of their communities. In addition, students develop the knowledge to properly use a map, compass and GPS technology, while also honing their orienteering, first aid, camping and survival skills. Other useful activities such as canoeing, abseiling, trekking and mountain biking are also included in the program.

In 1907, The Ridley College Cadet Corps. was officially recognized as Unit No. 162. The Ridley College Cadet Corps No. 162 remains the largest cadet corps in Canada and has been integral to the development of leaders both nationally and internationally. Each year, all students, as cadets are required to parade in an inspection by a visiting Canadian or Commonwealth Inspecting Officer.

What are Cadets?

One of the largest federally sponsored youth programs in Canada, the cadets program is open to youths of any country of origin, nationality and citizenship aged 12 to 18, who are interested in meeting new people, getting involved in their communities, and taking part in fun, challenging, and rewarding activities. Those interested can later on choose to become a member of The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, The Royal Canadian Army Cadets or the Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

The values emphasized by the cadet program include loyalty, mutual respect, professionalism and integrity. Cadets are encouraged to make positive contributions to Canadian society through environmental-, citizenship- and community-based activities. They also develop important life skills such as teamwork, leadership and tolerance.
