When a Job Finds You

Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro – 28 April, 2004 – Status magazine interviews job seekers, major employers and leading management recruiters to determine changes in the employment trends and practices in Serbia

Personal connections and nepotism are being replaced by professionalism in the employment practice in Serbia. In the interview to Status magazine, the representatives of Delta Corporation, DaimlerChrysler, Hill International and Prodirekt all agree that high unemployment, expatriates returning home, and the Western hiring standards, introduced by foreign corporations, have laid down a new set of rules for job seekers. Qualifications and interview performance have become ever more important in getting the right position.

Status magazine singles out Prodirekt as one of the few firms, which have been able to maintain focus in providing their management recruiting service. Dejan Trpkovic, founder of Prodirekt, describes the company’s interview process for management candidates as flexible and relaxed, without long testing procedures. “Top managers, with considerable experience, don’t feel it is appropriate to go through the same testing procedure as other candidates for lower positions. And they should not. Management selection in Serbia in this respect is going through evolution. Prodirekt operates as retained executive search firm, evaluating managers through interviews and social gatherings,” says Mr. Trpkovic.

Dejan Trpkovic about Management Recruiting in Serbia and Montenegro in an Interview for Daily Politika

Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro – April 6, 2004 – The oldest and most prestigious daily newspaper in Serbia and Montenegro (SCG), POLITIKA, describes the growing management recruiting industry in the country in an interview with Dejan Trpkovic, the principal of Prodirekt, one of the leading management consulting and executive search firms in SCG.

PRODIREKT Dejan Trpkovic Interview in PolitikaMr. Trpkovic comments that Serbian experts living abroad are not returning in higher numbers to SCG since the gap in their salary expectations and market conditions are still too wide.

“Credit crunch and strained cash flow pose a major problem for fast growing small and medium size companies in attracting professional management,” says Trpković. He adds “Local managers are not interested in equity compensations.”

“It is not good to see that most local companies are still thinking that they are implementing strategic management when they plan three years in advance,” adds Dejan Trpkovic. “Senior managers should be able to predict market trends and be proactive in the positioning of their companies on the market.”

“Although we try to focus on the selection of senior executives, Prodirekt sometimes has to engage in the middle management searches. The market is simply not developed yet to the extent to make the searches for top management an exclusive business option,” explains Trpkovic why major international retained executive search firms are still not present in SCG.

Finding a Successful Manager in Serbia

Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro – March 22, 2004 – Founder of Prodirekt in an interview with daily Danas speaks about managers and trends in executive search industry in southeast Europe

“Foreign capital and competition entered much faster in the East European markets than in SCG, causing a rapid increase in compensation packages for top managers. This trend may repeat in SCG as well, providing the government continues with the reforms and attracts much higher foreign investment,” comments Mr. Trpkovic.

“Successful managers are already in good positions in their companies; therefore, they are less willing to consider a change in their careers. Executives are looking, with the utmost discretion, for most qualified and respectable consultants to help them better evaluate a potential career change. Trust is the main factor in this culture,” says Trpkovic. “That is one of the main reasons why management candidates prefer working through the recruiters rather than directly with a company’s HR department.”

When asked about the potential differences in the management recruiting practice in the SCG and Western European markets, Trpkovic points out that the SCG market still lacks professionalism and differentiation in the service level. “A manager’s ultimate success depends not only on the skill set and competency fit, but also on the critical cultural match. The best executive search consultants are able to strike the right balance between the client needs and candidate career goals,” says Trpkovic.
